A woman was killed and a man was injured when a building collapsed on her car in central London.

It is understood the collapse happened opposite Holborn Tube station on Friday shortly after 23:00 GMT.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

"A man was pulled from the car and was taken to hospital, where he is in a stable situation at the moment," the spokesman added.

Paramedics and firefighters were called to the scene and roads have been closed in the area, police said.
Resuscitation efforts

London Fire Brigade said the concrete fascia of the building collapsed on to the car, which was in Kingsway.

Around 20 firefighters helped with the rescue, freeing the trapped pair from the car.

A spokesman said: "Another woman travelling in the car managed to get out of the vehicle before the brigade arrived.

"Around 10 people were evacuated from nearby buildings as a precaution."

London Ambulance Service said four people were injured, three reported to be in the car and a passer-by.

A spokesman said: "Sadly, despite extensive efforts to resuscitate her, a woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

"A man reported to be in his mid-20s had suffered leg injuries and was treated and stabilised before being taken to the Royal London Hospital.

"Two other people, a woman and a man, were taken to University College Hospital with minor injuries."
