"narrow defeat" in the contest for Labour's deputy leadership as if it were an event of huge significance. Hattersley was deputy for years and how has he influenced the history of politics??? Benn was never anywhere within shouting distance of no. 10. If he'd ever been leader (difficult to see how) the 1983 election disaster would have seemed a good result by comparison.
