The man's contempt for the Old Contemptibles was little short of revolting. His treatment of the retreat from Mons had me shouting and ranting at the tv for a good half an hour.

He is a terrible, terrible man.

The long-vaunted rapidity and accuracy of their musketry is firmly under question now. Even Max Hastings' book called it into doubt. To be fair, it's hard to describe Mons as anything other than a defeat. And Sir John French was a fearful arse.

Reading Barbara Tuchman's 'The Guns of August' atm. That's a bit more old-school.

especially withering. That isn't to say that the BEF didn't perform well when massively outnumbered and repeatedly flanked, but even so.
