Is that you don't f*ck up an entire match by erroneously sending a chap off. The sending offs would also sit looser, a team with a player sent off for 10 mins would get a milder punishment but sending off would occur more often and would be seen as stricter than yellow cards. Maybe this would discourage foul play.

You'd still need a red card. Otherwise it would be very tempting to commit unsportmanlike fouls in goal scoring situations, if you only had a ten minute suspension to lose and a goal against to gain.

Giving an orange card in error is surely just as likely as giving a yellow in error. If anything, the increased ease with which a player could be removed from a game would increase the impact of incorrect decisions.

Of course, I've never watched Ice hockey so don't know how well it works. I do know, though, that I hate anything that can give rise to something with a name like 'power play'.
