Fair few on here thought we should sign him at one point - wonder if they would own up to that now

I only ask because I often hear fans at our ground lament our players for not closing the man down and backing off at various points on the pitch.

For the record, I know what he should have done. But I am more interested to know if the average awimber knows as I hear many that sit around me that at The Emirates who do not.

(This is perhaps not the purist/official answer according to the laws of the game)

Monty is almost right. Backing off is the right thing to do. Slow the progress down and buy time for your team to recover and get cover around the ball. BUT, the mistake is he allows him to enter the 18 yard box. It is at this point that he needs to stop and make a stand against the player, get tighter and not allow him to get his shot away.

He obviously didn't want it enough and should think about the thousands he earns every week while poor supporters, squaddies and nurses have to live on a fraction of that :talksport:

Nah, he should have backed off for a few seconds, but at some point before he got within 20 yards of the goal, go in for the tackle. Chances are he'd have missed the ball and fouled the guy, but that is better than literally doing nothing except jogging backwards

attacker to make a choice further from the box too. The tackling is almost secondary as it depends on the choice made by the attacker.

I think the defender was trying to hide behind the goalie but Yaya shot too soon so he had to stop.
