another striker could come in handy but is by no means essential?

The big clubs have 3 quality strikers
Dont rate Podolski as a lone striker (Great on the left attacking mid), which leaves us with Bendtner, who is semi dead and not top quality
Then we are left with Sanogo.
Bring in a quality striker in the Giroud mould imo and even bring in a pacey south american like Pato who can make runs and play on the left or right of Giroud.

Essential to the top 4 title or essential to something more tangible?

Lets not take chances.
Realistically with our style and target man, we are left with Bendtner, who was almost certain to leave this window.

It is probably the weakest aspect of his game. It is like he doesn't appreciate that other players move in between the time he thinks of a pass and the ball reaching its destination...
he didn't
Would still like another though

Would a European, for example, who can make runs and play on the left or right of Giroud not suffice?

The decision is whether to go super, super, duper quality, or meh

for us not needing to strengthen there. With him out and Bendtner, too (who has been good when he's played this season), we are left with the options of Poldi (who does not seem really comfortable on his own up front with his back to goal, whenever he has played there) and Ozil (who really doesn't seem like he should be our go to man for back up here).
Of course, there's always Sanogo and Park...

One of the biggest disappointments about Theo's injury as that it's robbed us of the chance to see him and Ozil develop a partnership.

And yes, he's fast but I dont think dear old Arsene is feeling he's ready to be properly unleashed yet.

Theo being hurt doesn’t in any way change that unless you work in the tabloid media.

Our need for a striker is based on whether one feels that Bendtner and Sanogo are capable/good enough/ready etc to play for Arsenal.
Theo getting injured does not change our need for a striker.
