when my child is 1, how much work am I actually likely to get done? Fúck all?

Are 1 year olds still needy ****s or are they pretty much self-contained, independent humans by that point?

This last bit is a joke, obviously.

Frankly the best you can hope for is a sudden bout of insomnia to allow you to work while they occasionally sleep.

If you're able to focus on your writing despite constant minor distractions then you might be able to get a lot done. You should also get an hour or two in the middle of the day during nap time.

Children have a way of making their parents put things on hold, though. The mindset that prepares you to deal with any problems that arise is not conductive to work.

My son is, how to put this, one of the 'most lively' in his class, but as a one year old he really wasn't difficult to look after. Plenty of toys to chew, space to fall over in and a bit of TV was all he needed to be occupied.

That's only children though, you could have another so they keep one another entertained.

Most likely they would set the other one on fire or something.

But I'm not the sort of person that thinks spending all day piling up sandbags and marching in circles makes you a man

to help out.

I'm not sure I would trust a woman on anti-psychotic drugs with my new-born child http://www.awimb.com/images/smiley_icons/ohwell.gif

Buts that's more to do workload and working with other regions so have to manage my time.

You could rig something up.....cameras, microphones and have on a second screen so you get 'some' time to concentrate on work easy from the kid. But of course you'd still need to spend time going parent stuff so you'll just have to catch up with work outside normal hours....but your not losing time commuting so you might be fine.

Good luck

Anyway, he could end up being one of those chaps for whom fatherhood is the making of them. Who can say.
