green/ Your smile is like a breath of spring/ Your voice is soft like summer rain/ And I can not compete with you, Jolene'

Now that, my friends, is songwriting. Lyrical description followed up with a genuinely heartbreaking but unsentimental last line that hits you like a punch in the gut.

Roger Waters isn't fit to lick Dolly's high heels when it comes to songwriting. FACT.

a knife to the heart - as evidenced by the final line.

It's genius - beautifully pared down and perfectly written for maximum emotional impact. Don't ever mistake complexity for quality.

Simple, beautiful, predictable and dull.

Drinking warm beer in the soft summer rain...

And secondly it isnt a simile. It is mere description of a scene amd therefore acceptsble. The rain was soft, it was summer.

Comparing a smile to it is *******s :-)
