and because they are normally so anodyne that when one of them makes a weak joke about being God the world reacts as if Oscar Wilde has risen from the dead (a la Ibrahimovic the other day). then whenever a player shows a glimmer of intelligence or honesty or emotional authenticity then I automatically feel affectionate towards them.

Actually for emotional authenticity, Becks is the one that came to mind first. I remember when he was on Parkinson and he said the only time he feels truly relaxed is on the football pitch. It struck me as a brave, honest and interesting admission.
