This sort of comment piece might reinforce the prejudices of thick people but it spectacularly misses the point. I follow close to a hundred newspapers and magazines on twitter, probably more correspondents, bloggers and independent journalists. I also follow bunches of artists, film makers and documentary producers as well as companies that I like and or work with. That's all before people I know personally, professionally and everywhere inbetween.

Basically you create your own prism with which to view the world and if yours is vacuous and unfulfilling then it's your own fault.

On principle, I'd rally against anything that allowed and encouraged people up to 140 characters including the obligatory # to tell me about the banality of their lives :-)

But it's not just that, it's links and embedded media too.

I agree, the hype is annoying as are the celebrities on there, but it's such a lovely little simple bit of technology which is immensely powerful.
