Bravo to BT Sport who seem to have finally done something decent with punditry with their European Roundup show.

As you'd expect, it has James "Goooooolaaaaaaazo" Richardson and a host of intelligent, erudite and interesting journalists whose opinions, in a shocking turn of events, seem to have been formed off of the golf course.

Sample Bantz:
"In the studio we have Joe Cole who is a former Lille player, and still very much a Lille player in a very real sense..."

And, to be fair, he's really quite impressively knowledgeable about Serie A.

That said, it's debatable how much Robbie Saverage et al know about football which, given they spent about 20 years playing, is a staggering feat of ignorance.

You would ask a hound to explain hare-coursing to you?

The one about him knowing anything about football.

nullifies knowledge.

No-one who isn't on the gravy train and is simply looking to make a living out of the game is going to have anything interesting to say about it.

The best we can hope for is former players occasionally giving us some tactical and technical insight we may not know ourselves.

The only pundits worth listening to are the ones like David Conn whose expertise is more about the structure of the sport.

The rest are blagging it.

I'm not counting James Horncastle in this, tbh, but Laurens and Rafa are bot excellent, knowledgeable and funny.

with anything genuinely insightful to say about *football* and it's no surprise that both have remained pretty wide of the mainstream (Vickery with a graveyard slot on the BBC and Wilson forced to start up his own free magazine to find his niche audience).

It's meant for the vast majority of the population who don't necessarily consider themselves fans or supporters or masters of the footballistic sciences but who, nonetheless, correctly accept soccerball as their national sport.

We can't have it both ways, G. If we've all decided we're too cool to contribute enough, then someone has to take up the considerable slack.
