The Mach number is simply the speed of an object divided by the speed of sound. While the speed of sound varies according to a number of factors, at sea level on a standard day (15C and 29.92 inches) it is 761.2 mph. Mach 6, then, would be 6 times that speed, or 4567.2 mph (at sea level on a standard day).




It is also important to note the velocity changes with the altitude. So, at 20 miles altitude (a reasonable altitude for something going mach 6), the speed for mach 1 is 683.7 mph, resulting in 4102.2 mph when multiplied by 6.
