There was a lot of crap but there was in most genres. The cookie-cutter platform-shooter games were universally appalling.
Infocom, Magnetic Scrolls, Level 9 all made good adventures. If we understood then what we do now about interface design, and if the better game engines were more available, the standard would have been higher overall.
