However, I think that the most distant I have ever felt from my fellow countrymen is when contemplating the stellar status of Michael Barrymore during the late 80s and early 90s.

This was slightly holed below the line by the fact he accidentally strayed on to the escalators, did a little buckle and then had to hop and skip back to static floor.

Anecdote aside, I think it's that he patronised really thick people whilst letting the more mildly thick people in on the 'joke'. People like a bit of mild patronising, the royal family being the masters at this.
