View Full Version : Reasons I no longer like London

Bit fash style this but whatever.

1) the transport is crap, if it's too hot the tracks bend. if it snows a little bit it's the wrong type of snow. tube finishes early. lines don't run on the weekend. we pay far more than other cities for this. the tubes are overcrowded and seems to increase year on year. buses are now the same.

2) everything is overpriced. paying over the odds for a shoebox in areas you wouldn't even visit when you are younger as there is no other choice.

3) people have this odd obsession of calling absolute ****holes cool and trendy. i.e Shoreditch.

4) Camden town. I don't see the appeal of this place. (musical and clubs aside) it's a ****ty place that looks like a poor mans Amsterdam. That sells over priced tat to tourists. If I ever need go and buy a ****ty t-shirt with flashing lights or a t-shirt with Adidhash written on it I'll be sure to visit.

5) the people. London is a mix of blah blah blah. Hardly a mix most people stick to their own people. Whilst I like meeting folks from other areas. as soon as they come to London everybody turns into a 'Londoner' and is generally rude and silent.

People are also lacking any sort of manners or courtesy. Gone is the tradition of forming a queue in a proper manner.

In short it's ****.

There is lot's more but I can't be arsed.

1. Major metro transport is the same everywhere, with perhaps the exception of Tokyo, where it kind of works. God forbid you ever try mass transit in India.

2. Yes. London is very expensive, and that makes it tough if you don't have a top city job, not a doctor, solicitor, etc.

3. If you don't have one of those job types mentioned in 2 then you have to look at transitional areas and hope gentrification will take hold. Basically what they are saying is "I found somewhere not entirely un-affordable". You risk death during the period in which gentrification plays out, if it does at all. Good news generally is these area do gentrify, as there's a shortage of good quality housing for folks bemoaning the same issues as you. Public Transport in those areas in the meantime is full of dodgy types.

4. You're wrong on Camden Town. It's what you make of it. Camden Town has always been a place for bars and clubs and people gravitate there as it's got a good vibe. Of course market trader types will show up, they do anywhere there's a good enough crowd of folks and a chance to charge 5 quid for something they either nicked or paid 30p for.

5. On the surface, yes, I agree. You have to work hard in large cities to find your people and your vibe. It's there, you gotta dig for it. You won't find it in a pub.

Seems like you've had enough and are convincing yourself to get the motivation to make a move elsewhere. Grass isn't greener usually, as we all crowd around the big cities as they insulate you from unemployment, etc. much more than provincial towns and cities. It's the price you pay.

All the points you list are valid to a degree but we valid 20 years ago and 10 years ago, they are not new phenomena so no idea why they are now an issue.

You put up with it though because there are so many plus points that outweigh the aforementioned negative points, which are not unique to London. In Dublin the public transport is ****, it is very expensive and if you think Camden is a kip then you want to spend a few hours in Temple Bar.

The only problem with London is how sick the beer makes you feel next day when you have consumed somewhere in the region of 12-16 pints.

Pays the rent, but she declined when I offered to pay half, probably because it's only £300 :hehe: I don't have that much expenses really so I should be alright till I find a job. I signed up to this scheme they have for immigrants last week. People on the government run language course can get 80% of their salary paid by the government for a period of time, so it makes you more attractive to employers and helps you get your foot in the door as it were.

Wouldn't swap living where I do in East London with anywhere any of my mates live. They may have slightly bigger houses/gardens for the same money, but they also have that 1-1.5 hour commute every morning/evening while mine is 10-15 minutes.

ight for months on end..my mum n dad lived in Sweden for 18 months in 60's..left after 2nd winter back to london as mum couldnt cope with another, at least in french alps etc you can come down to annecy / lakes get some warmth and sun and actually have a change...in nordics its cold day after day, moth after month and not even that much snow often..and not enough good hills n lifts..you have to get into cross country..but its very dark

spent 2 weeks in lapland ..warmest - 15c coldest - 38c, no sunrise for 6 out of those days

Was cornered into a seat on the Stansted Express by 6-7 Italian kids who were part of some rugby team and were unfeasibly loud and annoying. Then was accosted on the flight by a Manc who I can only describe as being the spitting image of Frank Gallagher from Shameless with some Liam Gallagher thrown in. He had clearly taken some form of stimulant to help him through the ordeal of a 45 minute flight. Had to almost hide from him on arrival in Dublin.

Very enjoyable Saturday all the same. Watched MOTD when I got back, 4 magnificent goals though can’t help but feel a wee bit sorry for Norwich. The media reaction to the quality of our goals meant they overlooked that period post Flamini when we were a little tested.

But then I thought f**k them.

I live in NJ, about 10 miles outside manhattan. I lived in proper london twice, for a total of 7.5 yrs. I lived in manhattan for a few yrs too. And few other places to boot. I was in a software company that serviced the financial markets. I moved when nyc became majority of our revenues, I stayed as we sold said company and had an earn out period in which i couldnt leave and I like being here right now, but may come back. At which point, I would expect to live in the london area.

I left London because there was no way we could raise kids there, the other option was to move to the home counties and suffer a hellish hour plus commute.
