Is it coz one-dayers are all about racking up the runs as quickly as possible and test matches are more about not getting out?

Excellent question. I don't think any English player likes to be considered a one-day specialist, as we consider test matches the ultimate form of the game. Different matter in other, more backward places, of course, so their players are happier with that characterisation.

The great old school players tended to excel at both. That seems to be changing slightly nowadays and we pick distinct squads for each format, rather than simply the best 11 or 12 players in the country regardless of whether it's the longer or shorter version of the game.

Naturally a batsman's defensive technique receives a far more thorough and searching examination in the five-day game so, as you suggest, concentration becomes far more of an issue than it would be in the limited-over stuff.
