1. Pitt The Younger, by William Hague. A work of genius, by a genius, about a prig.

2. White Line Fever by Lemmy, in which we learn that the Nolan sisters partied hard. Yes.

3. Sagittarius Rising by Cecil Lewis. Perfect.

It sounds dull.

Robert Mitchum? The fúcker's been dead for years.

Also, one minute the writer is going on about what a great husband he was and how he was married for 60 years or somesuch and the next he's apparently revelling in the fact that he was nailing pretty much anything that moved. Odd.

Monk on Wittgenstein, Caro on Johnson and Moses are good.

way in which they could destroy them. Mitchum was quite rebellious and wasn't having any of it. He also liked his reefer and booze, which got him into rather a lot of strife.

I can't think of anything more fascinating. "Someone threw a ball. I hit it with my stick. He threw the ball again. I missed."

can produce such a well written and fascinating piece in 'Opening Up', whereas a man that was one of the greatest characters the game has ever seen writes something that fails to ignite at any point.

I think Atherton is a superb wordsmith, even in his media work.

Atherton is a Lancastrian who went to Manchester Grammar and Cambridge. He's obviously not dour either, being the only remotely likeable commentator except Holding.

I think of him as dour because of his batting style, perhaps.
