I can't speak for those that commented, but it may not be clear whether they were applauding the fact that this thing has been published, or for the fact that he'd written it at all (which is more than most people could do) and that someone here had read it and said it was ok.

...self publishing is no indication of its literary merit. I can tell you that many a best seller, even booker shortlisted, has been rejected by many publishers. Self publishing can get work out there and get the attention it needs. Writing a book is no easy feat. Not everyone can do it. Rant over!
