The west coast is generally more welcoming and down to earth* in my experience

* does not translate to lying in the gutter blootered on Buckie :hehe:

in my experience......never helped by me explaining that I'm actually half-Scottish in my Surrey/London twang

it's just inexplicably full of hipsters now. I guess it's comforting to know I'm well down the mugging order now though.

It's far less dangerous than it used to be and the its all round gentrification has made it the complete opposite of a ****hole. Transport-wise it's superb - tube, buses, overground and DLR.

I have a fairly obviously London accent. He is a very well spoken and clearly gay chap. The pub had its fair share of what one could describe as 'characters'. My first thought was "this can't end well". However, I was pleasantly surprised.

There are a few very nice pubs of the Mile End Road and the houses are f**king lovely round there. Can't really comment on Burdett, I only really get the bus down it.

The amusing thing is that it's only the chaps temporarily slumming it that talk it up, the natives still think it's a slum.

Well depends what natives you speak to. All of those who are around your age-bracket plus can't really believe the pace at which it's changed. A friend of mine has lived on Lauriston Road for 20 odd years and they've had to get used to it now being referred to as 'Lauriston Village' for the past 5 or 6 years.

I think you'd be surprised at the extent of change if you walked from Bethnal Green to Hackney Downs.

Shoreditch is the new Camden, buzz-wise, desirable residential blocks are being built in Whitechapel. Dalston & Stokie apparently full of advertising types.

I'll have to do another geomapping of my employer's membership punters to see how it's looking now. Last time I did this there was a noticable drift eastward.

East London is massive though, and very much of it is still the crime ridden ****hole I used to have to walk quickly through.

It's rather amusing as all of the born and bred hampsteaders now live in hackney, the *******s couldnt even point to it on a map when I lived there.
