Winning the league is about number of points gained from 38 matches. You could lose every match against the others in the top 6 and win the league.

I'm not certain I've ever fully understood the term, to be honest.

and the end.

but struggle with the 3 above us. which explains why we finished 4th.

so if we can tighten up that a bit and maintain our form against the rest of the league it will be much better come the end of the season. Where we left it to the last day to secure 4th place we could have already been safe with a win or 2 in the games against the other 3 teams above us.

to their detriment? Which is worth an extra point or something

Pat Vegas

and it should be enough.

The two teams are on equal points at kick-off. If there's a winner, that team moves ahead of the other by 3 points?!

Or?

Therefore the difference between the two options is 6 points.

Team A could be 3 points ahead or 3 points behind, difference is 6 points.

Pat Vegas

to make 3 points.

So let's subtract one from the other and it becomes 0.

Correct me if I am wrong.

The matches against other contenders are huge in terms of potential 6 point swings and potentially goal differential. It's ok to draw against top teams but losing makes it very difficult to win the title. Not a coincidence that we won at OT in 98, 02, and 04, for example, and have hardly won there any other seasons. If you're not good enough to win at least some of the games against your main competition you're probably not going to be good enough to just steamroll everyone below you all year without much of a slip up.

points apart..you are talking bollax imo

Maravilloso Marvo

Team A starts on 85 points
Team B starts on 85 points.

Option 1 - Team A win so they are on 88 points and Team B remain on 85 points.
Option 2 - Team B win so they move to 88 points and Team A remain on 85 points.

So the difference between either outcome, the possible swing, is from Team A being 3 points ahead to 3 points behind. So that is a 6 point difference.

on its results against the other sides in the top 6.

We'd all like Arsenal to do better against Chelsea and the Manchesters.

Beating the lower 2/3 of the league only won't win you anything except maybe 4th place.

Nobody is saying that we were world beaters last season and only a few Modd types are saying we are now.

What HAS been said is that our defence has looked more solid in 2013 (which the stats back up) and that our summer activity was fairly decent - it means we may put in a stronger challenge this year.

We've only kept 1 clean sheet and haven't played our main competition at all yet. I think we will have to be better defensively to beat other top 6 teams.

Chelsea Totals 8 matches:
Us: 11 Them: 14

Manchester United Totals 8 matches:
Us: 8 Them: 19

Manchester City Totals 8 matches:
Us: 9 Them: 6

Liverpool Totals 8 matches:
Us: 11 Them: 8

Spurs Totals 8 matches:
Us: 20 Them: 16

I'd say both are problems. We're not keeping a lot of clean sheets yet also not scoring much more than 1 goal on average, except against Spurs. Only 4 times in these 40 matches did we win 1-0, and all of these were at home.
