View Full Version : Has there ever been a player to leave Arsenal a star, under Wenger, and do better somewhere else?

Talking here about players who initially made their name at Arsenal and were sold or agitated for a move after that. Not youngsters released early (Larsen, etc.). Also not talking about titles. Rather individual performances--peak of their career stuff.

Anelka, Overmars, Petit, Viera, Henry, Reyes, Flamini, Hleb, Fab, Adebayor, Toure, Nasri, RVP, Song, etc.

None ever reached the heights achieved individually at Arsenal. Even RVP--who more or less maintained his level-- scored less goals at ManU than at Arsenal where he had won the player of the year award and scored 30 goals in the PL.

I could not really think of any player who unarguably would not say that Arsenal was his individual peak, even as they went on to teams that achieved more collectively.

Strange, no? Maybe we get the best out of them and get them to exceed their true potential somehow. Or maybe they stand out more with us because we have less standout players than the team they go to after us...

Ludicrous stuff about van Persie as well - being the focal point for a Championship winner team is worse than finishing fourth because people voted for someone else as player of the year :hehe: ridicules

not occasional starter, questioning whether or not he should go to anew club.

Anelka peaked with us. Became a bit player in the Real and Chelsea set up, wandering around Europe in between...

would have though scoring the goals that won Real the league was a bit higher (although you could argue that he was still an Arsenal player)

Absolutely no argument that Cole became a more complete player at Chelsea, but he played in a more flamboyant team at Arsenal. Does that mean he didn't improve - of course not

I dont think we can claim to be the zenith of anyone's career for anybody that's left in the last five years.

Performed very well in bursts for Arsenal, I cannot remember many who were wailing at the prospect of such a star leaving the club, it was the manner and timing of his departure that caused angst.

Since going to City he has performed well in bursts and won a title. But that is not important.

Either way it is perhaps a little premature to suggest his career has peaked at either club.

While Cesc's career is hardly at an end so it is ridiculous to judge him yet. All in all quite a lot of *******s in one post

Thinks that's job done for the likes of Anelka, Ashley, Nasri and Kolo.

Personal improvement does not come into the equation....
