However it is my view that should I wish to court a lady of Pakistani/muslim background (which I may as I find some very attractive) then my and her life would be in very real danger. The issue for me is really about assimilation. You chose to live here, so at least try to adopt our culture. You can have your religious freedom, but give it a go to try to fit in culturally. Learning English would be a nice start. Make sure your children learn the language and if they want to adopt Western modes that should not be discouraged.

Sometimes if a population is particularly concentrated they can get away with 'pretending' that they live in their home country. But those that are most successful really try to give it a go. The Bosnians that live here are an amazing success story .. as a whole.

Integration is the smart thing, of course it is, but you're kind of going against the whole idea of liberal democracy if you force anybody to integrate too fast. Also, it cant be easy coming to terms with that sort of thing, especially for the less worldly.

I believe that where I live is the largest Iranian or Persian population outside Iran. There is also a very large Armenian population in Glendale north of L.A.

the assimilation/integration bit. Rarely will you find 1st generation immigrants moving away from their own ideals and ways and adopting those of their new home. If anything they will hold on to their ideals much more strongly, almost beyond a fault.

As Jorge says, it takes at least a generation or two. What you would hope for is that those who move to a new country adopt what they feel are the best parts of both cultures.

Heh. The Bosnian kept putting up smokehouses to cure their own meats. They didn't understand why having a bunch of rickety, homemade smokehouses made out of scrap and going nonstop was thought of as a fire hazard and was illegal. :hehe:

It hasn't been all smooth sailing. Some still wear Muslim dress, etc., but many do not any more. There has been the inevitable 'disagreements', but generally their direction has been upward and closer to integration. They kick ass in soccerball! The soccer programs are out recruiting them to play for their clubs.

I stupidly said it Floyd was correct on the basis of the last 5 racial 'complaints' being made at my kids school all being raised by white children, on 4 occasions the instigators were black children and the other occasion was by a Bangladeshi child, that one involved the police being called though the child is still in attendance at the school.

This is primary school as well, sadly it is becoming more prevalent though, certainly round here.
