View Full Version : This black and white perception of our need for a striker is properly spasticated.

People think that because we may have been tentatively on the market for a striker the fact that we didn't get one is a massive, negligent failing.

But sometimes situations are less urgent and the reality is that we have three internationals all capable of playing in various striking positions, plus a youngster who wenger obviously has a lot of belief in, and, as a last resort bendtner.

Yes our bid for suarez indicates we are open to upgrading out main man, but players of that ilk willing to join us ahead of other clubs is realistically very small. Is soldado really better than giroud?

Are you suggesting he is spasticated?

Having failed to get a top level striker such as Suarez he clearly still felt a need to recruit. Who knows how many others he may have asked for that we never heard about.

so we clearly are at risk. Giroud has a lot on his shoulders now & form is not infinite.

some of our reported targets suggest somewhat more than an attempt to merely make up the numbers, don't they.

I love this idea that giroud will feel the weight of pressure a being our main man. I'd imagine for any player with ambition being the leading
man for a big club like us must be a dream.

And anyway, walcott outscored him last year and two others got into double figures so whats this bull**** about carrying a burden?

Young Mes isn't a striker, of course, but at least his signing covers "marquee" bit.

but a top quality defensive midfielder and centre half and back up goalie were more of a priority.
Less glamourous signings perhaps but contrary to the points of reply, we haven't had too many difficulties finding the back of the net either.

It wasnt too long ago he was a nobody playing in the French 3rd division.

He's been on a roller coaster ride the last 3 seasons....promotions with Montpellier, Winning the title the next season and then landing at Arsenal trying to mix it with City, United and Chelsea which a massive step up from was a big step outside his comfort zone.

Not unreasonable to expect a player in that situation to need a bit of time to make that next big leap forward.

from that perspective he's more exactly what we need right now.....a quality goalscorer but still capabl of improving further....Suarez and Soldado have shown their hands....they've reached their peaks....what u see wi them is what your're going to get but sometimes what you don't see is better yet.....

Anyway, we got the backup goalie, we got Flamimi and we also got Sagna as a possible emergency centre back.

Job pretty well done, imo.

To assign a goal to individual error by the defender kind of negates the skill or class of the attacker or attackers. A defender losing his man for example is as much quality movement by the striker.

If a goal results from an error by a player on the edge of the opposition box does it count?

Strikes me as a silly statistic really, as most are, in a game where ultimately only 1 statistic is of any relevance.

It's in those games where our defense get found out.

We lost most of them last season, from what I remember. The counter argument being that our forwards couldn't break their defences down.

I'd still say on balance we lose more games at the back than get let down by the attacking side of our game..

If someone has gone as far as to produce a statistic for it then I assume they have examined every goal and decided it being a result of error or not. Just seems a very ambiguous stat to me as one could see counter arguments.

Take van Persie’s magnificent finish against Everton. Superb pass, absolutely sublime finish preceded by superb movement to create the chance. Useless ******** defender lost him though. Brilliance and error.

All goals in some way can be attributed to error as in simple terms it is a defender (or opposition) function to stop them scoring.

PSRB
09-05-2013, 01:53 PM
I assume they're looking at misplaced backpasses, poor passes, John O'Shea misreading the bounce of ball and leading to hacking down the forward and resultant penalty....that sort of thing

Any jealousy pangs as he sees the likes of Moyes and then Fellaini off to the big boys.

I think they have bought a very good footballer in McCarthy.

should really have won all 3 games this season, certainly had the chances. Very happy with Lukaku coming in, not too fussed about Felli leaving, not his biggest fan, only ever up for the big matches otherwise just 'does enough'

Not sure he really likes being captain, too much media nonsense
