Without Wenger, it is clear that there would be no way we’d ever have signed him. The player himself has made it clear that it was Arsene who persuaded him personally and professionally, but that’s not the only reason this is down to Wenger.

Without his ability to keep us in the Champions League year after year on a fraction of what our rivals have spent, we would never have had the financial clout or been in a professional position to have made a signing like this.

I appreciate the club were in a difficult position as they still need to get bums on seats & you can't send a message out to say we can't compete at the very top due to this or that as it also affects the players, RVP for example leaving becuase he couldn't wait & making it difficult to sign top players.

Frustration with losing top players, not being able to pay huge transfer fees or not winning trophies is one thing. the sort of quality of player who is unlikely to get a game and therefore going to struggle to fit into the system seems like an extravagance. Having one who is familiar with his colleagues and ready to step in at moment's notice seems to make equal sense to me. All clubs are cutting squad numbers it seems
