The writer of that article itself is the sort of 'voice of the yoof' of the editorial department - which explains his style and vernacular.

Other than his little flurries of bus-stop colloquialisms the article is generally well written. I thought Vice was supposed to be a more accurate barometer of what is actually cool, rather than throwing in words like 'screwfaced' in a ham-fisted attempt to sound 'street'.

I think it comes down to how stylistically familiar you are with a publication/writer.

As I say, I think it comes down to how familiar the reader is with the said style.
Considering he's Vice UK's most popular author I think he's now very conscious of what a majority of his readers like/find amusing and does hone in on these 'urban' analogies quite often.
