For starters Liverpool had already stated after our optimistic 30m one that they valued Suarez at 55m. This was based on Cavani having been sold for 55m a player who is rated less than Suarez is.
Secondly if a clause did exist that Suarez could be sold for any bid over 40m then this would be gross incompetence on Liverpool's part,I can't see that happening ,not with their experience of selling players for top dollar. The most likely explanation for the silly 40m and a quid bid was that Ivan ,Wenger thought that this would allow Suarez to talk to us and then lead to him forcing a move away from the scousers.
I think though that him and his agent would have expected a bigger offer around 50m to be made after the supposed clause was found to be worthless.
This big bid never came ,and it never was going to be made . So it all ended up being a farce really with us being made to look like mugs after Suarez had made a grovelling apology to his team mates and then posed for photos with them laughing and joking. He even took his daughter , who was born in Liverpool, to the game on Saturday .
Despite all of this we still have mugs who think he will join us if we qualify for the CL .
