View Full Version : 40 million +£1 joke bid. So what should it have been +£10? +£100?

Although I do realise it was supposedly because of the release clause.

If Barcelona bid for one of our players and we rejected it then they came back a pound higher we'd be livid.

Not that that would happen as Arsenal would have accepted the first bid.

You don't negotiate by throwing out numbers with no sort of feedback.

That might still be the case too - after we qualify for the CL.

I originally thought Arsenal would have had a good look at the contract before taking an agents word for this.

broke their promise, so how better to distract attention from that by playing the victim and acting all hurt and insulted, helped by the media looking for a big story, and grumpy Arsenal fans keen to do their own club down at every opportunity.

Liverpool have been on the other end of such circumstances twice before when a player they sought thought he was able to leave so they knew exactly what they were doing.

I'd be very surprised if JP Morgan were able to ring my HR department and get to see my contract.

the negotiation has broken down. Liverpool appeared offended. We could have probably sewn this all up if we had made a different approach.

If a release clause was triggered AT £40m, then £40m would be what people bid. If the clause says 'over £40' then what would you offer? £50m to be very very very nice? £45m? £41m?

signed, no?

They could simply have faxed it over to Mr Wenger.

the agent should know more.

Arsenal must have known something they wouldn't bid on gossip.

Plus, if such clauses exist, how would they be enacted, if no-one can be told about them....

talking about?

If you think Arsenal have come out with egg on their face here, just think what a **** his agent looks like.

There are lots of different agents involved, all fighting over the business, broking deals all over the place. Making promises, feeding information, hoping that their piece of work is what makes the deal work.

Liverpool are always offended - it's what they do. Besides, they wouldn't want to sell the player to us anyway unless we gave then way too much money, as he still has 3 years on his contract, so it's irrelevant imo.

We were clearly wrong to trust the word of the agent but I don't see why this one pound threshold is a cause for fuss except as an excuse to bash the club.

Is a clause saying they have to sell at 40mill plus, then fair enough...but if not, then you've just likely cost yourself money at the end of the deal

Arsenal believed the clause to be valid. So they went all out with two fingers up to Liverpool saying "yeah and what can you do about it? Nothing".

Unfortunately, it doesn't appear as though we were right.

Release clauses are not meant to be negotiated over.

for example.

Let's say Suarez has any bid over 40 million release clause.
Arsenal are not aware of this and bid 42 million for Suarez.

Will liverpool now tell Arsenal the release clause has been triggered. I assume the player must be automatically informed of all bids?

interesting... are we so bloody desperate we want a racist dirty player to wear the shirt?? shouldn't we instead be debating WHO we're looking to buy or do we simply want them to grab a net and pull into the boat whatever flotsam we find?

More.....I do hope that the one pound ends up sealing the deal though when we beat fener!

i'm more concerned with his performance on the pitch... 10 matches for biting... when he does it again, how many? he's erratic and divisive... is THAT our only choice... Santos was an idiot...

agreed... however, i think he's poison in the locker room...
i guess the point i'm trying to make is: with all our 'financial firepower', we've seen what? three 'serious' bids??? Higuain would have been brilliant but we chose to play games with Suarez in the midst of that bid... he goes... Cavani? gone... Gustavo?
we keep hearing about all the money, all the resources... and yet we continually see low ball bids...
now we're seeing the 'we have top talent already'... code for 'we're not seeing "value" in the market'... Suarez is a symptom, not a problem..
also: you bring up a good point my friend: we heard boasting about our 'successes' in the transfer market yesterday: you named two utter jokes in Santos and Gervinho... we've been net sellers for the past 10 years and now we're arguing over how the Big Fish wriggled off the hook and NOT asking how many hooks in the water?
