View Full Version : So there's people who genuinely think the entire Suarez bid was a sham?

Suarez fell for it though.

Torres was sold for that amount by Liverpool years ago.
Cavani who is rated a lesser player than Suarez was sold recently for 55m.

we then look to be making a move, but the reality is we knew we were never going to pay £40million and £1 for him.

Monty91

notify Suarez when a bid of £40+ was made, was there not?

In which case, what was so ridiculous about our bid?

Monty91
08-15-2013, 03:41 PM
And anyway, if he really pushes hard to leave, we might get him for closer to 40.

on our people having actually seen the contract.

A deal will be done, I think, but it will be for much more than 40 million.

One just wonders then, why, if we wanted him, we didn't begin by talking to Liverpool rather than with the players' agent.

Unless we actually believed this clause related to an actual obligation to sell for 40 million+, rather than merely a bland agreement for Liverpool to inform the player that such an offer had been received

After all,, they just got Mark Schwarzer for essentially the same f**k all that he would've cost us.

Despite our new-found rude financial health, we can still legitimately tell clubs that we have a budget that we cannot exceed.

As I say, if you want big players you must pay big prices for them; it doesn't much matter who you are.

What was your angle?

Monty91

there will need to be a compensatory element to the transfer fee in light of his long contract and the fact that they've stayed loyal to him despite his disciplinary problems.

In the case of Van Persie, not only did he only have a year left on his contract but we'd also had many years loyal service from him and there was therefore a strong moral obligation to let him go without an unseemingly fight for an extra 5 or 10 million.

Also, he wasn't joining a direct rival, whereas Suarez is.

:-(

Surely it's simply asking players to misbehave in order to move clubs?!

As opposed to sham.

A f**king shambles that we would dine out on for a long, long time if it were our neighbours down the seven sisters road.

A new level of transfer incompetence even for us.

if things turn sour. Which is why our bid made a lot of sense.

20 million, and then we got wind of this mysterious clause and offered 40 milion + 1 pound :homer:

Where he said we fans should be glad that Arsenal bid for Suarez and that it was a huge step forward. My point was that actually getting top players is the huge step forward, not simply bidding for them.

is too disgusting to contemplate; what if no 50 million pound player actually wants to join us :yikes:

assurances that he would be allowed to leave if they didn't qualify for the CL.

Maybe that's where it all got lost in translation...

As it won't lessen the amateurness (not sure if that is a word) of us taking the word of the player's agent with regards to a clause that ultimately does not exist, or does exist but not as we were led to believe.

Perhaps we saw the contract and had our own legal chaps evaluate it, which doesn't lessen the shambolic effect, if anything it worsens it.

All we managed to do with that farcical +£1 bid was to antagonise the selling club who our manager then says we want to deal with in an amicable and respectful manner.

For the record if we do get him @ £45m then great as he is a top level footballer. Will it represent good value, who knows.

It all sounds terribly messy, to me. Wenger is being rail-roaded into this one, mark my words.

We could actually just use Jorge's idea* and save a bit of DM money by putting TV in there. After all, both Gilberto and Petit used to be centre backs.

*Please don't tell Jorge I said this.

would be necessary.

We stepped on our toes ofc as it turns out and look like fools. But 5 million more to camoflauge that is just the cost of doing business, right?
