The poor fella's cursed with the self-imposed requirement of having to write something every day, and as there's been almost nothing to write about all summer I think it's become rather difficult, so he has ended up bagging his head, somewhat.

I think he also suffers from his status as a very high-profile blogger who the club is aware of (to the point of chucking a sampler of his book into the annual tat-package). He feels that if the club is obviously not doing something right, he has the responsibility of communicating this. Every day.

him and those of us who read it, we're not all morons.

What might be pointless is doing it every day. If he has commercial reasons for doing that then good luck to him.

their club, however trivial or mundane.

If he made a living from that, then I would understand. But it seems that he doesn't and that it is essentially a hobby.

If not pointless then it is definitely odd.

Having a big audience supports this view, if anything..

I gather we are the most blogged-about club in the world, and I don't know whether that's an achievement or not, but if you are the guy that more people turn to first over swathes of other bloggers then you're probably doing something right.

FWIW I think that he does it on-the-whole with humour and balance, and even when he's pissed off with the manager (rightly or wrongly) he still generally manages to be respectful, which as we've seen, is not always an easy thing to do on the internet.

It may not be the best content in the world but it's got decent analysis (when there's something to analyse, of course), decent humour and it's pretty bloody regular.

People like that, clearly.

But the other stuff that comes with it, paid gigs off the back of it and the like, probably makes it worthwhile.

Also, isn't he some sort of voice actor? I cant imagine tens of thousands of people listening to your voice each week isn't at least a tiny bit helpful to his career.

when his profile rose. He would probably rather not be reminded of this, but he was in part responsible for stoking the fire for some of the worst episodes of player abuse we've seen in recent years, including the mass booing of Eboue.

Hang on, hasn't there been a huge renaissance of quality football writing in recent years, or am I imagining things?

Let's be honest, the best the main papers can do is a hastily filed ball of cliches that invariably covers the first 45 minutes for 90% of the piece and gets every major incident totally wrong.

The opinion/editorial side is usually even worse, ghost written former pros whose every sentence starts with "To be fair to...." or "Back in my day....".

I'd much rather read arseblog than 90% of the papers out there.
