Is it not acknowledged that he was a bummer? And is it not a matter of historical record that bumming was against the law? So he was quite rightly convicted of bumming. Just because he achieved some rather marvellous stuff, you can't ignore the law.

Should we send all drug users to prison? They are breaking the law, so would it be right?

And yes, if the law as it stands demands a prison term for convicted drug users then that is what should happen. If the law is wrong, we should change the law, not ignore it.

Although of course you are right that it is rather absurd to single individuals out for token, posthumous, gestures like this.
