Although I'm not sure what's more offensive, the fact they're driving these around brown neighbourhoods or the fact that we've paid for them.

They could be here seeking asylum, that means they've been persecuted in their own country for their religious or political beliefs, or their sexuality and they'd likely face persecution or torture if they return to their own country. There's a process in place that needs to be followed in determining whether their application is valid. They cant work whilst their immigration status is uncertain so would it be a better idea to a) put more into clearing the ridiculous caseload for the immigration service or b) spend that money persecuting the people who are here?

And yes, we kind of have a moral obligation to look after these people

Statistically speaking, you're much more likely to be illegal if you're brown.

Although whether you'll be able to read English is another matter.

My point is that they would be better served sorting the immigration backlog out and educating people like you rather than wheeling ads about.

Don't get me wrong: I'd rather live in a country that does try to play the white man in these matters, but we don't actually have an obligation of any sort whatsoever.

What is the arbitrary cut-off date at which you just say 'oh, boll*cks to it!' and get on with your own life?

Besides which, there are plenty of asylum seekers who have nothing to do with our imperium. Should they be kicked out on the basis that they're not our responsibility?

If it hadn't been such a mess, we wouldn't have been able to take it over so easily.

We caused mass migration of an estimated 14m people which resulted in the deaths of nearly a million. All because we put a simpleton like mountbatten in charge

Don't believe me? Have a look at the extremely hard-fought victories in the Sikh Wars.

No. The difference in India was that we were able to divide and conquer so easily. It was in many Indians' commercial interests to back the Sirkhar.

Is there a rebate available?

And how about all the descendants of working class English people who were exploited and abused in the industrial revoltion that made Empire possible? Do their families get a rebate as well?

Here's how history works, j: the weak get shat on by the strong. What colour those weak or strong people are or where they come from is immaterial. Trying to apportion blame or responsibility inevitably ends up being arbitrary and unfair and, as such, is utterly doomed to failure.

squeezing our goolies in no uncertain financial terms to divest ourselves of empire quick smart. Plus, of course, dear old lovely lefty Atlee was pressurising for the quickest possible withdrawal at the lowest cost to Britain (under pressure himself from the left wing of his party, of course)?

See, with some historical knowledge of this, life gets complicated, dunnit? Still, if in doubt, blame the toff, eh? ;-)

Berni

We were completely broke after six years of total war and the yanks were threatening to turn off the taps if we didn't get out. You wouldn't have found a single British person on the ground who didn't want to stay longer and do it properly. However, we weren't given that option.

The reason I'm dubious about your historical knowledge is your knee-jerk blaming of Mountbatten. He may have been a bit of a dolt, but he was given an impossible job. Blaming him for the mess of partition is just utterly ludicrous.
