It's basically forcing, at incredibly high pressure, water and some pretty serious chemicals into the ground beneath in order to fracture the layer of rock in question and capture the resulting trapped gasses which have been released.

It's the geological equivalent of standing on a tree branch and sawing it.

It may just be possible that there are chaps with big brains and circular slide rules who sort this stuff out for a living, j. You're like a northerner seeing someone use a mobile phone and screeching for them to be burnt as a witch.

"Damn the bottom line, I'm sick of mining companies getting a bad rap on their environmental record. We're going to work out a way to do this safely, even if we go broke in the process!"

Likely?

because this ridiculous caricature you use on here to (may I make so bold?) excellent comedic effect was invented by Mr Sharpe 40 years ago.

Yes, jorge IS Professor Walden Yapp!

"With his only friend a computer, Walden Yapp has lived a singular life. Professor of Demotic History at the University of Kloone, Yapp spends his days highlighting the corrupt capitalistic nature of the upper-classes, and his nights feeding Doris his computer the information he has gatheredSo when capitalist Lord Petrefact hires him to write a damaging family history, Yapp seizes the chance to chronicle the corrupt life of the Petrefact family. Spurred on by his expectations of dishonesty and depravity Yapp heads of the town of Buscott, where nobody is what they at first appear to be."

Next time I'm sorting some comics out I'll have a look.

Crucially though, how many pictures are there? Roughly

The problems are due to poor well design and engineering. And this is not unique to shale gas fracking. They are common to oil, gas and geothermal wells.

hydraulicking has never been a sensible, or particularly profitable for that matter, way of extracting anything from the ground.

It's madness to think it will suddenly be any less destructive, especially given the nature of what they are trying to extract.
