It was about men getting away with not working, taking responsibility, washing, shaving, getting their hair cut or dressing properly - all while espousing the virtues if free love (which, oddly, tended only to work one way) and taking as many drugs as they liked. It was, in short, predominantly male self-indulgence dressed up in a vague, pseudo-intellectual, politico-spiritual 'movement'.

Specifically your referencing of thing such as hair length and facial hair. A true hippy probably believes in certain values, some things are important to him/her and some are not – ‘free love’ as you put it perhaps being one of these. A short haired clean shaven chap could probably be as hippy as the long haired drop out we associate with this term.

The drugs again I am not sure about. Loads of people take drugs from the high respected areas of society to the student in his hall of residence discovering Pink Floyd or Ozric Tentacles for the first time.
