His legacy may be tainted by a remarkably poor film and some lightweight major works, but for those of a certain age, the joys of Indecent Exposure, Riotous Assembly, Porterhouse Blue and Blott on the Landscape will never fade. Condoms up the chimney, Konstable Els, a dwarf confused with a f**king/sucking pig... some truly wonderful comic creations.

Much as I loved his South African books, I think my favourites of his were Vintage Stuff and The Throwback.

I can think of few greater accolades than that.

And only recently read the follow-up Granchester Grind, which though not as good still has some of the former's rather wicked humour. Haven't read Riotous Assembly though - I shall have to rectify that

How did the song in The Throwback go? "But prize the arse of Sir Oswald open/And give me back ma prick!"
The kidnapped taxidermist shovelling out the old boy's offal, who demands 'more lights!' Points of genius everywhere.

Kommandant van Heerden is a fine comic character. And Konstable Els a fully rounded grotesque.

I was given it with 750 books on so I have had no need to download anything yet.
