This, in itself, isn't much of a problem seeing as I look at my phone pretty frequently. But it's the principle of the matter - I own the phone and pay for the phone - I expect it to keep its side of the bargain by delivering the messages when they are damn well received.

Has anyone else had this issue?

If it is anything but the latest most expensive model, there is the problem. Go into your local Apple shop and get ready to part with £500. This should solve your problem.
