If nothing else, their penchant for DDR nostalgia would mean that a "When Stasi Were Stasi" volume would fly off the shelves.

It's basically like Hoxton with cold war overtones, isnt it?

either a tramp, a disabler or a full blown mental.

And they are seemingly the ones most assimilated into society. The rest of the population appear to be in a permanent state of zombified melancholy.

I loved the place.

East Berlin still a relic to Soviet Occupation, striking architecture/memorials. I found it fascinating.

How was the Provence bit? Did you go to Avignon?

in the Louberon, set entirely into a cliff face, was probably the highlight of the whole holiday.

I'm not enough of a foodie to fully apprciate the cheeses and the wines but we certainly had some memorable meals.

Spent the day in Avignon, very nice but with so much natural beauty around it i doubt i would return.

Some of the property prices there. Jesus it's tempting...

The 'free' public transport is also rather good.

and with fewer tourists. The garrigue is brutally beautiful up there, and 'les chers collines' wild and remote. Hilltop villages like Roc-sur-Ceze with its attendant cascades are much less visited than you'd imagine. I'd move there like a shot if I didn't have to earn a living.

I got the feeling that the west berliners had been completely indulged up to that point and now they were all going to have to lob out from their own pockets to assimilate their down trodden, long lost brethren.
I'm out there in October, so I'll be interested to see how much the place has changed.
