Intresting how we rate the 100 m as the ultimate distance to win, Usain Bolt is perceived as a superman when in reality, the marathon runners are far more impressive. In a world championship including the animal kingdom, the humans would win long distance running, but not stand a chance in the sprint.

I was shocked to read that humans quite often win the 80 km "man against horse" race in Arizona.

Also fascinating to read about the exhaustion hunt in Africa, where the prey (antelope e.g.) is chased by running men until it falls over and dies.

He quite often points out that a man can beat a horse over a short distance as it takes the beast a while to work out how to move all four legs

Also, the horses step length is surprisingly enough, shorter than humans.

The neanderthals were stronger, faster and smarter then the homo sapien, still sapien won the battle to survive. Because the huntin' market changed and it was easier to catch prey by outrunning them over distance.
