are the only people that are described by their skin colour, all the time? Most other people are described by geographical origin. Asian, oriental, Native Australian, Native American.

If you describe the appearance of a Chinese that was born in the US, you'd say "oriental" in English and "asian" in American. You wouldn't call him yellow.

When used to describe black people it has unfortunate connections to regrettable attitudes and events in the past, particularly in the usa.

As with the shortening of the word pakistan- of itself, it means nothing. after all nobody is up in arms when we refer to aussies.

The word was perfectly fine in Norway until recently. Like Peter says above, it has to do with the context and the bad history, that people of African decent don't particularly like it. Apart from that, it really is a word that describes a person from the Niger area, isn't it?

You're English, aren't you? There's nothing wrong in calling you English - but if you moved over here, and started working with me, and we refused to call you by your name, and constantly referred to you as "the Englishman", or "the Brit", you'd get a bit tired of it in the end. And you'd say: "could you please call me by my name?" And we'd answer "oooh, touchy! what's wrong with the word English?"

It's all in the context.

white supremacy - ie there are whites and there are coloureds no distinction, just whites and the rest. That's where the offensive nature of term fits in

The chinese used to refer to foreigners as barbarians. That was not well received in the west, and would be viewed as offensive.
Still, the chinese person would probably insist that it was not meant as an insult, but just the word that is used to describe foreigners.

Would you accept being called a barbarian?

So, even though, it may just be a word to you to describe a non-white, it may mean something different to someone else.
