Though it does seem strange that there should be so many 'acts of god' in a god-fearing place. I wonder what sort of effect a probably apocalyptic natural disaster has on a people, does it make them closer to god?

I would have thought it would turn people into ferocious libertines, bound only by their momentary desires and in a near permanent state of bacchanalian revelry.

Also, would brick not be a better building material?

I've never really understood why people choose to live close by volcanoes, low-lying areas prone to flooding, tornado alley, etc*

*I appreciate some people have little choice but there are plenty that do

That said, if I were a decent, god-fearing and hard working individual who kept getting his house wiped out by tornadoes I would consider putting my faith in some bricks rather than a big beardy smiter.
