And not just the lack of a bass player

I grew up listening to The Stranglers. Why would I not like The Doors?

Theyre up there with the best, imo. I've spent a long time defending them from people who think they were a dilettante sixth form poet's band, and in many ways they were, it's just in my experience they are hated by real musos.

Tbh most of the hate is down to the awful Oliver Stone film

in 2006 with Ian Astbury singing luckily. To see him play some of the songs off of LA Woman that the band had never performed live was special. Seemed like a very cool person. He told jokes and stories about Jim and smoked a joint on stage and gave a 'legalise it' spiel. Wrote some awesome stuff.

he clearly inspired the other guys.

The punk strand is only one part of my DNA. Psychedelic rock is another. I spent years listening mainly to Hawkwind.

Ray is also great on the Making of LA Woman that either BBC4 or Sky Arts show from time to time.

I was never gone on the title track but it was spine-tingling when played live. Played it last before encore. Must have been 15+ minutes.

I was in the front row had queued for hours, was only 17 so still enthusiastic about things. I reached out to shake Astbury's hand but the stage was very far away. He got on his honkers, the two of us were reaching out for maybe 30-60 seconds, my legs being held then by someone behind me til I got the faintest of high fives and a cheer. One of my most memorable gigs.

Sad now :(

Youll be telling me you like The Smiths next. Now there is a band whose sound was built around a wonderful, steady bass player. He was virtually Donald 'Duck' Dunn

there is a chance I'd appreciate it more. I've long acknowledged Marr's quality.

I'm not going to knock the flower-arsed one, as I know many hold him in the highest esteem but I think it's fair to say that he just wasn't my bag.

Another thing is that my old buddy and band colleague on-and-off for over 15 years was a big Smiths fan and he was always pulling the band in that direction while I was trying to pull it in other directions. Even his current band which I saw the other week is a sort of Smiths meets Monochrome Set playing sea shanties.
