Even if we were willing to pay the biggest transfer fees and the wage demands, there are still other clubs - Citeh, Chelsea, Real, PSG, Monaco and maybe United and even Bayern - who would always be happy to outbid us.
It could be a busy summer with the likes of Falcao, Ibrahimovic, Ronaldo, Cavani, Neymar, Bale and Rooney - all genuine world-class - and probably all thinking of moving.
It's hard to see us competing for any of those really.
Our target level is more likely to be the tier just below that of borderline world-class talents:
Fellaini, Gomez, Villa, Hulk, Fernandinho, James Rodriguez, Hummels, Eriksen, Fabregas, Hamsik, De Rossi etc.
We'll also doubtless be looking at the level below that of top talents, that have the potential to be world-class if they continue their development:
Bony, Benteke, Ganso, Fernandinho, Jackson Martinez, Bender, Alderweireld, Ogbonna, Gonalons, etc.
If we could bring in even just one player from each category that would be an amazing leap forward - plus a reliable keeper to challenge Sir Chesney. The hardest thing would be a player from the top tier - Rooney would be the most likely, but still hard to imagine.
The other staple of any summer will also be one or two "unknown" French talents coming in. Sanogo and Grenier would do the job very nicely...
