A HEAVY metal star will sing at the Fawley Hill steam and vintage rally this weekend.

Bruce Dickinson, lead singer with Iron Maiden, will perform on Sunday while former Radio 1 Breakfast Show DJ Mike Read will be on stage on Saturday.

There will also be two talks by wildlife artist David Shepherd and two animal statues, including Boris the Polar Bear, which was in Sloane Square, and Winnipeg Bear — the inspiration for Winnie the Pooh — from London Zoo will be on display.

The event, which will raise money for 30 charities, is being organised by Lady McAlpine, who lives on the Fawley Hill estate with her husband Sir William. It will celebrate the centenary of the Hudswell Clarke 060 Saddle Tank Engine No 31, which has been in the family for all its working life.

Other attractions will include a Hurricane, Spitfire and a Red Arrow, stationary engines, traction engines, horse-drawn ploughs, JCBs, steam cars, Ferraris, buses and boats. There will also be a display by the Red Devils, an auction, car boot sale, a dog show judged by TV presenter Ben Fogle and children’s craft stalls.

The estate’s animal sanctuary and restored railway will be open to visitors, while the station tea room will sell food and drink to raise money for the summer fireworks display in Marlow Road, Henley.

Lady McAlpine said: “Not only are we looking forward to this event but, because it is unlike modern steam or other vehicle rallies, we are attracting enormous interest across the spectrum of transport and, of course, vintage transport and conservation groups.

“We have 100-year old fairground rides, lovingly preserved. Rallies these days can be very much governed by rules and regulations and this will be ‘as they used to be’. It will be very casual — traction engines playing games.”

Nick English, co-founder of Henley watch company Bremont, will fly over the estate in his Bomber military aircraft.

Sam Brabham, a racing driver and grandson of three-time Australian Formula 1 champion Sir Jack, will bring his racing car to display and there will be a collection of Ecurie Ecosse cars.

The estate will be open tomorrow (Friday) from 6.30pm at 6 entry. There will be entertainment, fairground rides and food and drink.

Tickets for Saturday and Sunday are 10 per day or 16 for the weekend (concessions 8 and 14). Children under 12 enter free. For more information, call (01491) 571373, email estate@fawleyhill.com or visit www.fawleyhill.co.uk

"PRINCE WILLIAM surprised locals during a visit to a village pub.

He had lunch at the Lord Nelson in Brightwell Baldwin before joining his wife at the wedding of their close friends William van Cutsem and Rosie Ruck Keene in Ewelme.

The Duke of Cambridge, who was an usher at the wedding, was part of the group of 14 who had booked a table at the pub for 1pm.

The group, who were dressed in tails, ordered a selection of starters, main courses and desserts, including steaks and crab, as well as wine.

Amanda Eades, who manages the pub, said: “Prince William came in for lunch with the groom and all the other ushers. It was a very pleasant surprise and quite exciting for us.

“There was a table booked for 14 people but it could have been anybody. They just came in as normal customers but he was noticed straight away. He was very polite and charming, as they all were. Nobody mentioned anything about him being there, we all carried on as normal. We’d love him to come back.”

Three security men sat at a nearby table while the group enjoyed their lunch.

The wedding party then travelled to Ewelme for the wedding at the village church, which started at about 4pm and lasted about 90 minutes.

The service was conducted by the Rev Jonathan Meyer, pastor of the church of St Mary the Virgin.

Tilly Pudwell, who lives in the village, watched the Duchess arrive from a raised garden of a friend’s house, which is opposite the church.

She was wearing a cream and black polka dot Top Shop skater dress which she also wore during her visit to the Warner Brother Studios last month.

Tilly, 17, said: “It was really exciting, although we didn’t see her for very long. She looked really good. You couldn’t really see that she was pregnant from the angle we had.

“My friend’s mum found out about the wedding so we came down and watched because we knew Kate and William could be coming because they are good friends with them.”

Tilly and her friends waited by the entrance of the church to try to catch another glimpse of the couple but the Duke and Duchess left via a back entrance.

She added: “We obviously really like her and we thought if she was in the village and we had the opportunity to see her we should do so.”

Prince William reportedly dated the bride during a brief split from the Duchess, then Kate Middleton, in 2007.

The groom’s niece, Grace, was a flower girl at the royal wedding and memorably stuck her fingers in her ears during the flypast.

The groom’s brother, Major Nicholas van Cutsem, serves with the Household Cavalry and led the escort accompanying the Prince’s royal wedding carriage from Westminster Abbey to Buckingham Palace. "
