View Full Version : I had an argument with the missus the other night about whether football was art

I suggested that when football fans eulogise about a goal or a pass, this is fundamentally no different to a posh bloke analysing a painting. They're just using their own respective vernaculars to do so.

I'm right, aren't I.

you create a painting with your hands or feet or anything else. You create a goal from your feet. Their always need thought and skill to be achived.

So your right monty.

I'm pretty sure that blokes with enormous brains and red trousers argue for hours about a definition of 'art'.

that one is considered (by many) to be low-brow, whilst another is high, despite their being no difference.

a typical stupid football supporting man.

I had to explain to my missus why the Benfica fans were crying after the game.

'why are they crying?' They just lost the final.
'and they are crying for that? meh' 'have you cried over a football match?'

I said perhaps one occasion in 2006. she wasn't impressed.

So that is an unbelievably feeble point.

If opera is art, then pop music is art, and anyone who disagrees with me can get to f**k.

Whereas a spectacular flourish in football is intended largely to help win a game. Any emotional response we may have is purely a by-product.

Have you heard any Finnish folk metal Sir C? I'm listening to quite a lot of it at the moment, tremendous fun it is.

of a football fan not to acknowledge that they can appreciate a moment of artistic merit on the pitch.
