and running into compressibility issues, which caused the aircraft to pitch even further down, thus increasing the speed even further; eventually the wings would come off if the aircraft didn't hit the ground first. Several Typhoons were lost in this way, until (if I recall correctly) Roland Beamont had this happen but managed to recover by pitching the nose up using the elevator trim tab. Analysis of his report led to an understanding of what had occurred. Anyway, it is considered likely that these incidents almost certainly included some aircraft exceeding mach 1.
