Secondly, I started to think about how much I don't want Nick Compton in The Ashes team. And I was thinking how it was hugely likely that he'll be in there. But what if Jonny Bairstow has a great series against New Zealand and Compton does averagely. Someone has to be dropped for Pietersen to get back in and there's an argument to be made that Root could open, KP at 4 with Bairstow at 6. Obviously he needs to score runs for that to be a possibility, though.
