Having watched a recent Louis CK show and Never Scared by Chris Rock the night before it struck me just how much of a parlous state british stand up is in and how little we demand from our comedians.

It was rammed full of **** childhood references, callback to jokes he made five minutes ago (presumably any longer would have been challenging) and such tried and tested colin-from-accounts greatest hits like "t'internet".

Seriously, we used to be a funny country

They're supposed to tell jokes, j. Make us chuckle for a moment. For the Big Questions we have writers, philosophers, poets, artists and priests.

If you're watching Peter Kay expecting some enlightenment, you're f**ked.

We were asked ages ago by friends if we wanted to go, and without consulting me my girlfriend said yes we'd love to.

So I made her pay :-)

when there are fantastic performers like Daniel Kitson who either refuse to use that medium, or aren't allowed because their material is too weird or 'edgy'

I noticed the posters last week and shuddered.

To give you an idea of what an abortion of a show - and indeed what kind of audience it was - the biggest laugh came when he repeated verbatim the lyrics to the "Park, Park, wherever you may be" football chant.

I saw Bill Bailey doing a 'warm-up show, whatever that is.

Do you know, Bill didn't swear once, all evening. Just goes to show.

The point is that you cant find a UK comedian to make the reverse point.

Michael "skipping c**t" McIntryre? John "Amiable Scouser" Bishop?

I suspect there are a lot of better comedians out there. Monty gives a very good example in Daniel Kitson but far from the only one. We don't really have a channel like HBO

Bill Bailey and Greg Davies but also the likes of Stuart Lee and Mark Thomas, who add much more of a political overtone.

Peter Kay still makes me laugh, as did McIntyre - will say his stuff isn't as good as it was

Bill Bailey, Al Murray, Jimmy Carr all make me laugh

If anything he probably spends too much time making you think.

Mark Thomas I love, though he ditched comedy nearly 20 years ago

You seem to be saying it isn't, which I don't believe.

Many comedians have written excellent books, too. Like Spike Milligan. Do they not count?

Top show.

Stuart Lee is a brilliant comedian imho - I know you have a very different view on that.

I honestly don't care - I like him so go and see him. Whether he is flavour of the month at the moment or not is simply not of any relevance - beyond the fact that I am very happy when a comedian (or band for that matter) I like become successful.

You obviously don't have a sense of humour that I can understand. I won't go as far as saying you don't have one. There are several so called comics that just cannot make me smile, let alone laugh but somebody with a totally different view on humour must like them.
