12" vinyl art is long gone. Album covers never had the same effect on CD, but they were still there. Now the album as a physical thing is dying, and the artwork goes with it.

There's been a massive resurgence. Cover art may be less universally acknowledged and appreciated due to technology, but it's by no means dying out.
Quick off the head example, The Strokes - Is This It. One of the most iconic albums and covers of the last decade and was most widely bought on CD.
