if only I could believe that he was an honest man who loves Arsenal for what they are and not another of his toys that he could easily destroy like others have done with clubs such as Portsmouth

Russians, rulers of the Rich List

RUSSIAN oligarchs dominate the latest list of Britain’s wealthiest residents – with three of the top five coming from the east, it has been revealed.

With a personal fortune of 13.3billion, Alisher Usmanov now tops the annual rundown of the nations’ richest people.

Investment tycoon Len Blavatnik, 55, makes it to No 2 in the respected Sunday Times Rich List, published tomorrow, with a fortune of *11billion.

The oligarchs’ wealth means compatriot Chelsea football club owner Roman Abramovich, 46, who made his money in oil, has to be content at fifth place with 9.3billion.

The Hinduja brothers, Sri and Gopi, grab third place with their fortune valued at 10.6billion – up a place from last year.

Mr Usmanov, 59, started his journey towards his billions with a company making plastic bags.

Today his main interests are Metalloinvest, Russia’s biggest iron ore producer, Mail.ru, the country’s largest internet company, and MegaFon, a mobile phone operator listed on the London and Moscow stock markets last year.

Mr Usmanov, who knocked steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal off the No 1 spot to No 4, also holds a 30 per cent stake in Arsenal football club, although it “rankles” that he has not got a seat on the board of the north London club.

Roman Abramovich is the fifth richest

Britain is now home to 10 times the number of billionaires compared to 1989
He owns sprawling Sutton Place, the former Surrey home of J Paul Getty, in addition to a 48million London mansion.

The sports fanatic met his wife Irina Viner, 64, head coach of Russia’s rhythmic gymnastics team, when he was a young, talented fencer. The Russian’s enviable portfolio of investments in the US includes Groupon, Twitter and Facebook.

Last year’s flotation of Facebook made him 1.6billion. Meanwhile, MegaFon is worth 12billion.

While Mr Usmanov has given more than 110million to charity over the past year, the soaring value of his assets mean he is in a league of his own when it comes to wealth. The lure of London and its opportunity for unrivalled wealth expansion means many more tycoons are likely to follow.

Britain is now home to 10 times the number of billionaires compared to 1989 when the Rich List was first published.

The collective wealth of the 1,000 richest people in the UK now tops 450billion.
