YOu should understand out college sports ,more in line with the kind of loyalties that there are in English soccerball -- in other words it's a tribal thing. The state schools represent a geographic area. They also represent those that do attend and DID attend that particular university.

There are some crazy, insane Kanss Jayhawks fans that never attended the school, but Kansas is where they grew up.

This is something that is distinctly lacking in pro sports. They may represent a city, but then they can also pull up stakes and move somewhere else. You won't find a university moving. Also, the players come and go more quickly in college, but the institution itself as well as the traditions are still there.

from a different geographical area? I don't like the money in the game and the way that players are churned over often with little concern for their education so long as they are performing for the team.

I guess it doesn't help that I went to a college with a fairly crap set of sports teams. Nobody really gives a toss what they are doing compared to say a UCLA or some of the bigger schools.

As an aside, there's big talk of an MLS expansion team finally coming to Sacramento in the next few years. If that happened I might actually be arsed to go and watch a game. The Sac Kings can f**k off for all I care if we bring in a big soccer arena to downtown and get an MLS franchise to replace them.

Plus there is no more unpredictable event on the sporting calendar thqan the NCAA College Basketball tournament. It's like the FA Cup compressed into three weeks time. Everyone want to see that big upset, and there is always one or two at least every year.
