It doesn't seem to affect the ability of clubs to attract or keep players. Spurs, Liverpool, Inter Milan, Lazio etc haven't been noticeably restricted in player trading

in the competition which, if you can do it, gives you the chance of one day winning it. We have't got particularly close recently but were 15 minutes from winning it a few years back. And we qualify from the group stages every year, regardless of our domestic form.

It's no surprise that Man City, who on paper have got a squad capable of challenging, have so far been turfed out at an early stage in the two years they've qualified.

Qualifying for the first time is part of a long game. I don't advocate qualifying for the sake of it. You qualify to win it!
